Another Year of Free Summer Concerts

In what has become an annual tradition, the 2011 Georgetown Summer Concert Series provides first-rate outdoor concerts for the greater Georgetown community that are free of charge and accessible to all. Families and friends come from all over Merrimack Valley, and sometimes even further, to take in the weekly summertime entertainment.

For six consecutive Sunday evenings in July and August, the Georgetown summer evenings will echo with the sounds of talented local and regional musicians. Concerts will be held Sunday evenings, beginning July 10th through August 14th from 5 to 7 p.m. at American Legion Park.

The Concert Committee Year in and year out the committee produces this program aimed at bringing a diversity of musical styles and artists to town for the enjoyment of those who attend. Over the years genres from Klezmer to Polka have played the Kiwanis Ice House Performing Arts stage. From hiring the various acts and sound systems to organizing food vendors and raffles, the concert committee works to create a successful blend of offerings so there will be something for everyone over the course of the season.

Georgetown resident John Murphy, chairperson of this year’s Summer Concert Series program, said, “It’s enjoyable to produce this series. It’s a great mix of young families sharing a picnic and groups of friends sitting together in lawnchairs, all having a good time socializing outdoors for a couple of hours.”

According to Mr. Murphy, “We begin planning for the concerts almost as soon as the previous season is over so that we are able to engage a variety of performers and bands that will provide good quality music and be fun.” This year’s concert series is presented by the Georgetown Cultural Council with sponsorship provided by local organizations and businesses.

Food will be offered for sale by local, non-profit groups, including the Kiwanis, Boy Scout Troop 51 and the Georgetown High School Class of 2012, in order to increase awareness of their organization and raise funds.

This year’s line up is better than ever, says Murphy, and it includes dirty mac band, Porch Rockers, Erin Harpe, the Goodhues Band, Bad Moon Rising, and Five O’clock Somewhere.

Concerts will be held at the Kiwanis Ice House Pavilion located at American Legion Park, off Prospect Street in Georgetown. Concerts will run on consecutive Sunday evenings starting with Sunday, July 10 and ending with Sunday, August 14. Each week the concert will begin at 5:00 p.m. and end at 7 p.m. In the event of rain, a decision will be made by 2 pm whether to cancel and reschedule or not. Concerts will NOT be relocated to the Penn Brook school as they have been in the past.

Concerts are free and are handicap accessible.
