For five (5) consecutive Sunday evenings in July and August, the Georgetown summer evenings will echo with the sounds and styles of talented regional musicians. Families and friends come from all over Merrimack Valley, and sometimes even further, to take in the weekly summertime entertainment. The 2009 Summer Concert Series, in what is now an annual tradition, provides first-rate outdoor concerts for the greater Georgetown community that are free of charge and accessible to all.
The concert committee, a group of local residents, has already begun the selection of bands for this year’s program. Concerts will be held Sunday evenings, beginning July 5th through August 2nd from 5 to 7 p.m. at American Legion Park.
Year in and year out the committee works to produce this program aiming to bring diverse musical styles and artists to town for the enjoyment of those who attend. Over the years musical styles from Klezmer to Polka have played the Kiwanis Ice House Performing Arts stage. From securing the various acts and sound systems to organizing food vendors and raffles, the concert committee works to create a successful blend of offerings so there will be something for everyone over the course of the season.
Georgetown resident Susan Madigan, chairperson of this year’s Summer Concert Series program, said, “It’s enjoyable to produce and coordinate this series. It’s gratifying seeing those who attend each week, whether it’s young families sharing a picnic or a group of adults sitting together in their lawnchairs, all are having a good time outdoors for a couple of hours.”
This year’s concert series is co-sponsored by the Georgetown Cultural Council and the Georgetown Kiwanis Club. Funding is also obtained through advertising purchased by local businesses who display their business signs in front of the stage.
Food will be offered for sale by local, non-profit groups in order to increase awareness of their organization and raise funds. This year’s groups will include the Kiwanis, the Mike Donohoe Scholarship Committee, the Cultural Council and the Knights of Columbus.
